Nappily Ever After

Hey Sistas, if you haven’t seen the movie Nappily Ever After you should definitely check it out. The movie premiered on Netflix about two months ago and it is a movie all natural hair women can relate to. The movie is about Violet Jones (Sanaa Lathan), she is on a journey to really find herself.

Violets long time boyfriend Clint doesn’t not propose to her and he breaks up with because he feels he does not know the real her since she is always so prefect. Growing up Violets mother (Lynn Whitefield) centered everything around being a prefect woman. Looks meant everything to Violets mother. Her mother would always make sure her hair, makeup, and clothes were always neat. After, Clint does not propose to Violet she tries to revamp her look with blonde hair, and goes to visit Clint but she finds out he is with anew woman.

Violet is feeling to hurt and devastated she goes home and shaves her hair all off. She frees herself of something that meant so much to her.  Violet goes on a journey to really find herself.  Violets mother is very upset by her decision and tells her she looks like a boy. St first she hates her hair and goes into the restroom at work crying. After attending a support group of women who are suffering with cancer she realizes things are not so bad. She realizes she is grateful and that she needs to be confident.

Violet meets a guy named Will and they start dating. Will owns a hair salon. Violet introduces Will to her mother and her mother does not like him and feels he is not as successful as Clint. Will gives Violet a new outlook on life; but after hearing how Violets mother bashed him he breaks up with Violet.

Will come back into her life, and proposes to her. This is what Violet has been waiting on. At the engagement party everything is going well. Violet reflects on how she wishes her parents would have encouraged her to just be herself. Violet jumps into the pool and a sign of freeing herself. Clint looks at her crazy and is slightly embarrassed by her actions. The movie ends with Violet pitching a successful hair campaign with Will. She walks out of the building feeling, confident, successful, and care-free.
The movie is kind of cheesy but very relatable. We take so much pride in our hair when hair isn’t everything. I love how although she had two love interests in the movie; she did not settle for either. This is a great representation of how you don’t need a man or hair to validate your womanhood Self-love is the best love, Bye sistas!
